Work Package 3: The Applications and Interoperable Media

The application and interoperable media work package (WP3) aims to:

·         Identify the common requirements for transport contactless media

·         Identify the benefits of multi-application media to enlarge interoperability

·         Define common requirements on interoperable contactless media and          multi-application management for Public Transport

·         Issue recommendations for migration path to multi-application media

The first deliverable of this work package provides a state of the art vision of the benefits for multi application media for end users and a description of multi application management functions. This document address the following points :

·         History and concepts in of Transport Fare Management Systems

·         General benefits of multi application media

·         Multi application media as a mean for enhancing interoperability

·         The benefits of multi application customer media

·         Requirements for multi application customer media

·         Requirements for interoperable downloading process

·         New roles to be considered in the IFM Conceptual model

According to the EU IFM project vision, an interoperable Customer Media is a device able to hosts several transport applications from distinct IFM schemes and is a first step in an approach to reach interoperability.  In later phases, a nucleus EU IFM application will need to be standardized to host EU citizen status, to offer common template for hosting local product and to ultimately host common products. As shown below, next steps will require standardisation work and political decisions to enable the acceptance of an interoperable EU IFM application across all the existing IFM schemes in Europe.

As a pragmatic approach, the IFM is proposing to:

•        (Step 1): Download local application on demand for occasional usage

•       (Step 4): Download EU common application when available at a later stage

From this statement, it becomes then pivotal that interoperability for application download must be ensured to allow each IFM scheme to download transport application on third party media. Moreover, such media will likely be used for different types of applications and not only transport ones. The IFM model is then likely to evolve to integrate new roles and new links related to the media management.

A second deliverable “Deliverable 3.2: Common requirements and recommendations on interoperable media and multi-application management” will be soon available and will address the following items:

·         Listing the common requirements for Customer Media

·         Clarifying the relationship between IFM roles and multi
          application customer media stakeholders

·          Listing the common requirements for multi application management

·         Giving some common requirements for EU status application
